Sid and Nancy: A Tragedy of Love in the Punk Rock Era

The tainted love story of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen’s is a tail of tragedy, inbeded in rock history. Their rebelious and calous world was driven by drugs and alcohol, which eventually destroyed their relationship and inserted them into the books of punk rock era.

The sex pistols were a band that defined the punk movement. Their sound was raw and rooted in anti establishment. Sid Vicious, born John Simon Ritchie, was an English musician, best known as the basist of the band, and his rebelious nature and defiant attitude fit perfectly into the bands vision and spirit. One of his friends noted that he personified “everything in punk that was dark, decadent and nihilistic.”

Nancy Spungen had a very trubulent time before she met Sid. She was an American groupie, whos life was filled with drug use and wild behaviour, making her a stand out figure amongst the punk scene. She moved to London in 1977 and quickly became inthralled within the punk rock world. She was controversial, passionate and highly strung, making her the epitome of the music scene.

It was in early1977 when Nancy met Sid, they were both notorius in the punk circle for their wild behaviour. Nancy introduced Sid to heroin, igniting a very destructive pattern that would follow throughout their relationship. They were both passionate…
